Hearts is a trick taking based game in which the object is to avoid tricks containing hearts or the queen of spades. Hearts is generally played with 4 players using a standard 52 card deck. Each player receives 13 cards. There is no trump suit and hearts are worth 1 penalty point and the queen of spades is worth 13 points. The object of the game is to avoid points.
Passing
On the first hand of the game, each player selects three cards and passes them facedown to the player to their left. The cards passed to you are then added to your hand. On the second hand of the game, three cards are passed to the player to the right. On the third hand, three cards are passed to the player across. On the fourth hand, no cards are passed. This passing cycles repeats throughout the game: left, right, across, hold.
Gameplay
The player holding the 2 of clubs starts the game by playing that card. The play then proceeds clockwise. Players must play the suit of the card led if they have it. After each player has played a card, the trick is over and the player who played the highest card in the suit led wins the trick and leads the next trick. Players may then choose which card to lead with. Players cannot play hearts or the queen of spades on the first trick of the game. Players cannot lead with hearts until hearts have been broken. This occurs the first time a player plays a Heart. A player may lead hearts if there are no other options to play even if earts are not broken.
Scoring
Points are assessed at the end of each trick per number of hearts taken and if the queen of spades was taken. If a player takes all of the hearts and the queen of spades (26 points), then they have "Shot the Moon" or "Dug the Ditch". When this occurs, the player has the option of having 26 points taken from their score or having 26 points given to each other player. The game ends when a player has received 100 penalty points. The winner is the player with the least points at this time.
